Peter Egan

Picture

The actor Peter Egan will be giving the opening address at the first Surrey Vegan Fair.  He is best known for his TV roles, including Hogarth in Big Breadwinner Hog, the future King George IV of the United Kingdom in Prince Regent (1979); smooth neighbour Paul Ryman in the sitcom Ever Decreasing Circles (1984–89); and Hugh "Shrimpie" MacClare, Marquess of Flintshire, in Downton Abbey (2012–15).

Peter is a longtime animal lover and was vegetarian until January 2016 when he took part in Veganuary and has remained a vegan ever since. Starting in around 2010, he began to campaign publicly on behalf of animal rights and animal welfare.  He is an ambassador for the dog rescue Saving Suffering Strays - Sarajevo, Bosnia. He and his wife Myra adopted their Bosnian dog Tidus from this dog rescue. They continue to give support to the desperate street dogs of Sarajevo and their lone rescuer Milena Malesevic.  Peter is an active ambassador for Animals Asia, a charity that works to end cruelty to animals in Asia. He is also patron of All Dogs Matter, a dog rescue and rehoming charity in and around London and Norfolk.  In May 2015, Peter became Patron of Chaldon Animal Sanctuary, a charity that offers homes for life for dogs and cats. Peter personally took one of the Bosnian dogs now named Crusoe to the sanctuary in May.  In August 2015, Peter was announced as patron of the science-based campaign For Life On Earth (FLOE), which fights against animal testing in the field of human medical research.  Peter is also Patron for the Dr Hadwen Trust & Compassion in World Farming. Vice President of both The League Against Cruel Sports and the RSPCA.

The film, Fiona Oakes, - For the Animals, tells Fiona's inspirational story and how she is motivated to undertake superhuman feats to  raise awareness of the sanctuary and the plight of animals everywhere.  To view the film please click here.

Food for Life instructor - Farrah Rainfly

INTRODUCTION TO THE FOOD FOR LIFE "HOW FOODS FIGHT CANCER" NUTRITION AND COOKING CLASS

The Food for Life Nutrition and Cooking Class Series for Cancer Prevention and Survival covers a variety of cancer-related nutrition topics and demonstrates how to prepare several meals loaded with antioxidants and phytochemicals, high-fiber and low-fat foods, and healthy dairy alternatives.

In this introductory nutrition and cooking class you will learn that certain diet patterns seem to have a major effect in helping people diagnosed with cancer to live longer, healthier lives. Overall, scientists estimate that about a third of the 13 most common cancers in the UK could be prevented through improved diet, physical activity and body weight according to the the World Cancer Research Fund. In this class, you will learn about the right food choices that can help reduce the risk of developing cancer as well as overcome the disease after it has been diagnosed.

Food for Life instructor Farrah Rainfly will take you through a Nutritional lecture (Projected video with Dr. Neal Barnard - President of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine) and then show you how to apply the healthful techniques in a cooking demonstration.

About the programme: The Food for Life programme is a cost effective community-based public intervention nutrition education programme of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). It is an evidence based innovative approach to a medical challenge. It aims first to prevent disease by educating participants how to cook for health. When a disease has been diagnosed, it works for improving survival. Designed by physicians, nutrition experts, and registered dieticians, each of our curricula includes a nutritional lecture about how certain foods and nutrients work to promote health, weight loss and fight disease. Participants are then shown how to translate this complex scientific nutrition information into affordable and nutritious dishes that can be recreated easily at home all within a supportive fun group setting.
